Strides for Success, Adaptive Riding Program at Lazy J Ranch, offers a comprehensive and individualized approach to adaptive riding that includes much more than time in the saddle. Each lesson is thoughtfully tailored to the participant’s abilities, needs, interests, comfort level, and personal goals. Mounted riding remains an important part of the program, while appropriate horsemanship and horse-connection activities may also be incorporated into each session in ways that are accessible and meaningful for the individual participant. Depending on each rider’s abilities and goals, lessons may include opportunities to participate in activities such as grooming, leading, learning about equine behavior and communication, identifying tack and equipment, horse care, and other hands-on horsemanship experiences. These activities are always adapted to meet the participant where they are. There is no expectation that every rider perform the same tasks or complete them independently. Our program follows the Learning Levels curriculum, providing a structured and progressive framework for developing riding and horsemanship knowledge and skills. We also incorporate additional activities and learning experiences that support each participant’s individual goals and abilities. Through this individualized, whole-horse approach, participants can develop riding and horsemanship skills while also building confidence, communication, independence, problem-solving, responsibility, resilience, and a meaningful connection with their equine partner.
